Privacy Policy
Last updated: January 2026
Commonplace is a personal knowledge platform. Your privacy matters to us, and we've designed our service with that in mind. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and how we protect it.
Information We Collect
We collect only what's necessary to provide the service:
- Account information: Email address and username when you sign up
- Content: Notes, bookmarks, lessons, and highlights you create
- Profile data: Display name, bio, and avatar if you choose to add them
- Usage data: Basic analytics to understand how the service is used
How We Use Your Information
- To provide and maintain your Commonplace account
- To display your public content to visitors of your page
- To send important service updates (you can opt out of non-essential emails)
- To improve the platform based on usage patterns
Your Content, Your Control
You decide what's public and what's private. Each entry you create can be set to:
- Public: Visible on your page and in search
- Unlisted: Accessible via direct link only
- Private: Visible only to you
Data Storage & Security
Your data is stored on Cloudflare's infrastructure with encryption at rest and in transit. We use industry-standard security practices and regularly review our systems. We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties for marketing purposes.
Cookies
We use essential cookies to keep you logged in and remember your preferences. We don't use third-party tracking cookies or advertising cookies.
Your Rights
You can:
- Access and download your data at any time
- Update or correct your information in account settings
- Delete your account and all associated data
- Export your content in standard formats
